The Research Behind the ProPerformance Center

The published research on balance training, laid out with its sources

Balance is not a single-purpose skill. The same systems that determine how quickly an athlete changes direction also determine whether a 75-year-old catches themselves on an uneven sidewalk, and researchers increasingly tie those same systems to cognitive resilience and the health of the inner ear. That is the clinical reasoning behind the ProPerformance Center: one program, built on the ProBalance 360 and 720 platforms, serving four connected areas rather than a single use case.

This page walks through the published research behind each of those areas. Every study referenced is linked in the sources at the end, so you can read what the researchers actually found.

Sports performance, at every age

Balance and body awareness are trainable skills, and the research covers a wider age range than most people expect.

A 2024 systematic review in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation looked at 621 athletes between the ages of 12 and 24, across soccer, basketball, handball, volleyball, taekwondo, and fencing. It found that proprioceptive and balance training improved postural control and joint position sense and reduced chronic joint instability, with some studies also showing gains in agility, speed, and sport-specific skills like dribbling and passing.

Youth-specific research backs this early: an eight-week balance and proprioception program improved passing accuracy in 13- and 14-year-old basketball players, and dribbling skill in adolescent soccer players regardless of sex.

This is not just a youth or elite-athlete story. Proprioceptive decline is progressive and lifelong. It does not start at 60; it starts the moment training stops. That makes balance and proprioceptive work relevant across the entire athletic lifespan: youth athletes building a foundation, competitive athletes protecting joint stability and shaving reaction time, and masters and recreational athletes preserving the coordination that keeps them in their sport longer.

Where Mechanical Motion Therapy fits: vibration and percussive input activate proprioceptors and increase motor unit recruitment. Early research points to real neuromuscular effects, though evidence on direct athletic task performance is still developing. Age-related deconditioning

Balance measurably declines with age. The encouraging counterpoint is that it responds to training, including late in life.

The encouraging counterpoint: randomized controlled trials, including in adults over 80, show balance training improves lower-limb strength, exercise endurance, gait speed, and overall physical activity levels.

Deconditioning is not just getting weaker. It is a measurable, trackable decline in the systems ProBalance evaluates directly. Balance and cognitive health

This is the pillar with the most emerging research, connecting the inner ear, balance, and how the brain performs.

A National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) analysis published in The Journals of Gerontology found a significant association between vestibular function and cognitive performance in U.S. adults.

Subsequent work has found vestibular hypofunction independently associated with decline in spatial memory, executive function, and visual-spatial processing. Separate imaging research links reduced balance ability in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment to altered connectivity in vestibular-linked brain networks, including the prefrontal cortex, insula, and hippocampus.

Researchers now describe vestibular assessment as a potentially valuable addition to geriatric cognitive screening, and vestibular rehabilitation as a strategy worth exploring not just for falls but for supporting cognitive reserve.

Separately, dual-task research, which combines a physical balance task with a cognitive task, shows consistent benefit: dual-task training improves both balance performance and cognitive measures like episodic memory and sustained attention in older adults, more than either type of training alone.

ProBalance is a balance assessment and training platform. It does not diagnose or treat cognitive decline. The accurate claim is narrower and still compelling: balance is measurably connected to cognitive health in the research literature, an objective balance evaluation can be a meaningful early conversation starter, and structured balance training, particularly when paired with a cognitive dual-task component, is a reasonable part of a proactive longevity plan.

Vestibular function

Inner-ear balance problems are common, and vestibular rehabilitation is among the best-established areas on this page.

Vestibular hypofunction is common: researchers estimate as many as 95 million adults across the U.S. and Europe experience it, and it is linked to reduced quality of life, poorer overall health, and higher fall risk.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) has more than 70 years of clinical use and is well supported: research, including a systematic review in multiple sclerosis populations, confirms VRT reduces dizziness and, notably, more than some alternative approaches, improves balance itself, not just symptoms.
